Brawl Busters Review – Mixindave

Brawl Busters is a third person MMO brawler with an selection of wacky characters and cartoon style graphics, best thing about this game is that its totally free to play, like other free to play games there is an option to buy premium content to give you the edge over everybody else, The game has two in game currencies , Buster points or BP are earned through game play and rock tokens or RT can be purchased in lumps of 10000 for €6.99, 20000 for €13.69, 50000 for €33.49 and 100000 for a whopping €62.99. You get a better choice of weapons with RT points but the prices are quite steep as you only rent them for a set amount of days, an example I found called an “angry snow bat” gives you an attack level of +12%, increased fire rate and a time bomb, renting has a range from 650RT points for 3 days of usage to 6900RT points for 90 days usage.

Items purchased with buster points seem to be only cosmetic but are permanent buys. This is the small catch with free to play but there is still a ton of fun with free,  But to the game itself, my first thoughts on  BrawlBusters where “what the hell is this game?” i personally never heard of it, maybe just bad marketing or a miss on my part. When i had a first look of the game i  instantly thought of team fortress 2, the graphical style and character models are very similar except the game is from a third person perspective and uses very different weapons. What did intrigue me was the game has a co-op mode to fight waves of zombies and boss battles, i personally think co-op is a big part of todays video games and is a great fun social aspect of gaming especially playing with a bunch of friends….and a few beers. Anything with a co-op portion is a win in my eyes.

So to the game itself, the menu system is very easy to navigate, here you can check the store, your stats, leaderboards, single player, multi and ranked matches. You can also join a chat channel, join a party chat and chat with friends, overall a simple setup and easy to follow. Like other mmo games BrawlBusters has character development, as you level up you get more BP points and clothing which have time limits like the weapon rentals, maybe some are permanent but only time will tell. You can play a bunch of modes like team deathmatch and free for all and an interesting one called glow rush which involves you defeating the enemy and collecting glow from them,  it also has a ton of tutorial missions which can be repeated  to help you with game controls and get you used to the different character styles.

There are different items you can pick up and also fun little level objects such as the phone box to telleport you out of a sticky situation and fire hydrants and manholes to jump up to higher points in the level. BrawlBusters has five character choices, the slugger has long range guided attacks but is weakened by low health and slow speed, the fire fighter has a defensive roll to play, has long range and the highest health but is very slow. The rocker is  an all round  balanced character, the boxer is agile and quick on his feet but with the lowest health overall and finally the blitzer who has the highest attack speed but is very slow. a good thing about choosing a character is you can switch between them once they are all unlocked, you dont have to stick with the same character.

The game controls are very easy to pick up. WASD control your movements,  E deploys weapons such as bombs and poison, left mouse click is your basic attack, holding right clock does a more damaging attack and both buttons together do an even tougher third attack, hitting shift with a direction is used to evade, evading then hitting the mouse button does a critical attack but is quite hard to do… well for me it is.
Graphically the game meets todays standards and doesn’t require a beast of a computer to play, im rolling with a dual core and a graphics card that is several years old and i can play it on the highest graphical setting and resolution. even the recommended settings only require a dual core and a geforce 7 card. a very optimized game and its only a 300MB download.

Overall BrawlBusters is a fun game that anybody can play from a casual level to the avid gamer, you can get short bursts of fun or a long session of mayhem. even if multiplayer is not your thing its got a  co-op side which is fun to play with friends, and there is nothing to lose as the game is free, singleplayer also has a decent amount of tutorials and missions to play around with. its free, its only a 300MB download so you have nothing to lose.
